About the Beer, chocolate and Belgian fries

Welcome by our guide at a place chosen by you in the historical center of Bruges (hotel, coach parking,..).

Bruges has a lot of culinary assets. No other Belgian town has more gastronomy to offer. From snack bars to eating-houses over Thai and Indian to the absolute world class restaurants.
Three typical Belgian specialties are hot: beer, chocolate and Belgian fries.
During your guided tour in the historic center of Bruges, entirely on the list as World Heritage, you’ll visit three active museums: Choco-story (= the Chocolate museum) the Frietmuseum (= Belgian fries) and De Halve Maan (= brewery). Furthermore while hopping from place to place we see and comment upon the most important historical buildings and squares .E.g. the Market Square, the Burg, Fish Market, Dijver and the Minnewater. From time to time our guide gets welcome help from the chocolate maker or brewer her/himself. Not only for the in-depth explanation but certainly when it comes to tasting.

First comes the Choco-story. This museum covers the whole chocolate history starting with the cacao beans of the Maya and the Aztecs to the high-tech production process nowadays. The museum is an initiative of the Van Belle family of the namesake brand of Belgian chocolate with stores all over the world. Of course you can taste and sample the homemade chocolates…
In the Saaihalle, built in 1399, we find the Frietmuseum. It all started with the potato import from Colombus’s America and ends with mouthfuls of Belgian fries. In between those Belgian fries make their appearance in film, music and art.

Finally we arrive at the Walplein. Beer at last ! ‘ De Brugse Zot’ is still being brewed in the brewery De Halve Maan, the last family owned brewery of the historical center of Bruges. This brewery is deeply entrenched in Bruges’ history. Since up to the present day, six generations of the Maes family have succeeded each other. A local guide tells us, just before or just after lunch, everything about hops and malt.

After this interesting day probably only one question remains: was all this a Belgian or a real Bruges’ story?
